The deputy leader of Oodua Action Movement (OAM), Mr. Sam Oyabayo, has accused the former governor of Lagos State, Mr. Bola Tinubu, of sabotaging his group’s effort to secure an independent nation for the Yoruba people of Nigeria. He made the charge in an exclusive interview with Irokopost TV’s Rudolf Okonkwo.

Mr. Oyabayo attributed Tinubu’s failure to intervene in the killings going on in Yoruba land as one proof. “Tinubu that wants to be president in 2023 needs a change of heart and join his people, ” the UK-based activist said. “He can even be the president of the Yoruba people if he wants to. But he has to prove himself and show that he loves his people rather than love his money.”

Mr. Oyabayo argued that Nigeria’s problem has gone beyond rotational presidency and who is at the top.” We do not have the same values,” he maintained. “An individual cannot change that. The president is an individual.”

He hoped that those rallying around Tinubu would soon become wise and see that he is in Nigerian politics for his personal ambition.

The educationist also urged Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and publisher of Saharareporters, to stop wasting his time seeking a revolution in Nigeria. He explained that after being in Nigeria to support Omoyele Sowore during the 2019 election, he realized that Nigerians could not be together because the North does not value education. “Nigeria is a sandwich of America and Afghanistan,” he said. “It cannot work.”

He appealed to Omoyele Sowore to join them in the quest for the Oodua nation. “Ten Sowores cannot improve that nation,” he concluded.

Speaking about Adeyinka Grandson, another Oodua activist, Sam Oyabayo, described him as an intelligent and factual guy who brings out facts without diluting them. He, however, urged Adeyinka Grandson to reconsider his belief in exterminating Igbo people in Yoruba land.

“Why kill? Why do you need to kill?” he asked. “I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe that some people are pure Yoruba, and some people are not pure. By the time we start going into that, we are turning ourselves into another Hitler.”

Oyabayo stated that the Igbo are not a threat to the Yoruba in Yoruba land. The Yoruba, he said, have the ability to accommodate foreigners as long as they behaved themselves.

Oyabayo, a son of a farmer who did well for himself in the UK, is looking forward to the day former President Olusegun Obasanjo will come out in full force to support the Oodua nation. At the moment, he noted, “Obasanjo is not supporting the Oodua movement because he fought for Nigeria against Biafra.” But he observed that the retired general was not coming out in full support of one-Nigeria either, pointing at his recent warnings to President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Very soon, something will give,” Oyabayo said emphatically to Irokopost TV’s Rudolf Okonkwo. “And, then, we will all have an opportunity to sit around the table with the involvement of international bodies.” He warned that if we don’t do that, another group might emerge to pursue the same goal via violent means.

“Our expectation is that we will not rest until we achieve what we set out to achieve,” Oyabayo concluded. “It is not negotiable.”
