Labour Party crisis could have been averted if Abure embraced Peter Obi’s advice, Says Campaign Spokesperson

Amidst the Labour Party’s recent national convention, internal strife has erupted, casting a shadow over the party’s unity.

The chief spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign organization, Yinusa Tanko, contends that adhering to Peter Obi’s counsel could have averted this discord.

Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had proffered recommendations aimed at fostering inclusivity and broader participation. Unfortunately, the convention, which saw Julius Abure reelected as national chairman, missed the mark in representing the party’s diverse membership.

Tanko criticized the recent national convention, highlighting it as a missed opportunity for broader participation. He argued that the event, which saw the reelection of Julius Abure as the national chairman, lacked inclusivity and failed to fully represent the party’s diverse membership.

These criticisms shed light on the internal dynamics and challenges facing the Labour Party as it navigates post-election realities and internal governance issues.

In an interview on Channels TV, Tanko emphasized Obi’s concerted efforts to intervene whenever issues arose within the party and his attempts to foster improvement. Tanko outlined Obi’s suggestions, including wider consultations with various stakeholders such as the TUC, NLC, and youth groups like the Obidient group, to ensure a more inclusive decision-making process.

Tanko noted that while Abure had the right to contest the national chairmanship position again, it was crucial to conduct the process in a manner that allows for broader participation. He criticized the deviation from an initial agreement for an all-inclusive national convention starting from the grassroots level up to the national level.

Tanko also addressed concerns about the impact of the party’s crisis on Obi’s prospects in the next election, asserting that Obi’s reputation as a standalone brand would continue to garner support regardless of the party’s internal struggles.
