The President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Professor Ambassador George Obiozor has warned the the Nigerian Army against extrajudicial killings reported across the South East.
Professor Obiozor made the remarks while receiving the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. General Taoreed Lagbaja at the Ohaneze National Secretariat, GRA, Enugu.
Speaking with Maj. General Lagbaja, Obiozor advised the Army leadership to take deliberate and careful steps towards ensuring the protection of lives and properties of innocent Igbos.
He stressed that the Southeast and all parts of Igbo land should not; “for any reason be turned to a killing field.”
The internationally reputed diplomat and scholar expressed concerns over reports of unwarranted harassment of Igbo youths, traders and men by soldiers across different communities of the Southeast.
Describing the Nigerian Army as among the best in Africa, he urged the Army to maintain professional code of conduct in carrying out their peacekeeping assignments.
He said that Igbo youths are generally “peace loving, law-abiding, patriotic and hardworking individuals who do not deserve nothing but justice, equity and inclusion in the Nigerian union.”
Responding to Obiozor’s remarks, Major General Lagbaja ascribed to Ohaneze Ndigbo a key stakehold in managing the affairs within the “Division’s core area of responsibility.”
He commended the leadership of Ohaneze for their stance against resort to violence by any group in pursuing their goals or ventilating their grievances.
He further assured that the Army will do its best to ensure protection of lives and property in the region.
