Tension as Tinubu set to attend AFCON final, CAF President hints at Nigerian bid for FIFA World Cup hosting

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to grace the Stade Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan, showing his support for the Super Eagles as they face off against Ivory Coast in the climactic showdown of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) this coming Sunday.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), made this revelation on Friday during a press conference held after a meeting with Presidents of CAF Member Associations, setting the stage for the much-anticipated final.

Responding to inquiries regarding the prospect of Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup again, following South Africa’s historic hosting in 2010, Motsepe hinted at a potential bid from Nigeria. He disclosed that President Tinubu would be in attendance at the final in Abidjan and expressed his intention to discuss the matter further with him.

Motsepe stated, “Nigeria must put in a bid. The Nigerian president (Bola Tinubu) is coming to watch the final on Sunday. I will have a conversation with him about it.”

Nigerians reacts over Motsepe stated:

An X user, @holusojy70, said, “He didn’t deem it fit to visit the people of plateau during their grieving period, Ibadan blast and the victims werent of importance to Him but AFCON final is of great importance to him.”

“I hope our goals won’t be gone like SUBSIDY. He should please stay in Aso Rock and watch from there. The team will bring the trophy home for him. Let him be in charge of the economy and Shetima in charge of security. We would appreciate Obi to be with the supporters,” @oladare_ayod said on X.
